2011 Ford Escape

2011 Ford Escape It’s a wonder how the Ford Escape has been running for the better part of the decade now and yet there hasn’t been a whole lot to talk about as far as dramatic changes on the SUV are concerned. And, the 2011 model looks to be no different, either. Sure, it’s had a some changes here and there over the years, but for the better part of its lifetime, the Escape seems to have been a vehicle that Fordcontinuously pays little attention to. The growing concern that the Escape is already showing its age must be one reason why Ford has bared plans of releasing the next-generation Escape in 2012.
For now, the 2011 Escape hasn’t changed much from the previous years’ models, although it does come with some new technological features, including a new HD Radio that syncs in fantastically with the brand’s SYNC entertainment system. It’s hard not to dismiss the Escape, but given the fact that not a whole has changed, we’re thinking that we’ll all be better off to just wait for the next-gen model coming out next year.

First Glimpse: New Ford Territory

Ford Australia today fired the first big shot in its 2011 new-model assault.
The company has revealed the first official image of its new-look Territory SUV, set for release next year. The eagerly awaited preview signals what will be an unprecedented new-model onslaught Ford has planned for 2011.
With more than 90,000 Territory SUV customers curious for a glimpse of the new model, Ford Australia has responded with a sneak preview. The multi-award-winning SUV is dressed to impress wearing a stylish suit based on Ford’s kinetic design language, making it instantly recognisable as a member of the Ford vehicle family. It also provides a glimpse into the future of Ford’s global SUV styling.
New Territory’s design overhaul is significant both inside and out. Its fresh new look will include a major interior update and boast a number of technology highlights, including the introduction of turbo-diesel power, details of which will be communicated in 2011.
For Ford Australia, the next 18-month period is set to be one of the company’s busiest in its 85-year history. Approximately 85 percent of the entire Ford Australia new-model catalogue will either be replaced or updated during this time.
The Blue Oval bolstered its line-up this month when the new WT Fiesta hatch and sedan ranges hit Australian roads. Immediately following this has been the arrival of the updated MC Mondeo range.
Next year will see the arrival of the stunning new Territory SUV as well as the all-new Ford Focus, which made its world premiere earlier this year. In addition, Ford’s iconic Falcon will be even further enhanced with a stylish new look and new powertrain options, including the introduction of Ford’s global EcoBoost engine and ultra-efficient LPI (Liquid Phase Injection) technology.

BMW 2011

BMW 2011Arkym has heard our cries and have brought forth yet another tuning kit for the BMW 3-series that doesn’t have us choking on last night’s dinner as did their AeroRace One. Fit for any 2010+ BMW315isLCI, the M-Sport MC Edition package is just the right amount of sporty appeal without the head-scratching mods that appeared on that other model.
Typically when we come across a beautiful rendition of a car, we assume that the idea behind it was thought up by a man, since the auto industry is chock full of testosterone. This car, however, was the brain child of Maureen Chen, a woman who wanted to stand in front of her own car and not stand to the side of someone else’s ride in a scantily clad bikini.
Arkym’s press release sums it up the best stating: "And thus what was coincidentally manifested from this perfectly timed request was the Arkym E92 3-Series M-Sport MC Edition, 3-piece AeroSport kit for the 2010+ BMW 335is LCIs. A good relationship between individuals in the same automotive scene, man or woman, is absolutely key no matter where they come from as neighbors in our world. Given the opportunity for us at Arkym to explore the 335is lineup with Maureen Chen provided us with refreshing insight on how her personality and professionalism in wanting to be a part of her own project translates directly toward the look and feel of her car: sporty, classy, “avant garde”, and not afraid to bite."
No exact details were given on the different components added to the BMW E92 3-Series, but we’re staying on top of this one and bringing those details as soon as we have them. Until then, check out the gallery to see what happens when a woman decides that average just isn’t enough.

With the new generation 6-Series,BMW will start offering the famous Individual range for this unique convertible. It will be available starting the autumn of 2011 with unique options for paintwork, alloy rims and interior fittings.
The Individual range only includes optimizations made to the car’s exterior and interior. Everything else remains untouched. Meaning that customers will enjoy the performance of the same 4,4 liter V8 engine, but in a better looking car.
As an exterior option, the 650i Individual Convertible can be ordered in an exclusive Tansanite Blue metallic, which is available for the first time, bit also colors like Brilliant White metallic and Agate Brown metallic. No matter what color you will choose, all the paint will be applied in up to seven layers offering this way fascinating iridescent effects, an extraordinary brilliance and exceptional depth.

The exterior and the interior

Next to the impressive exterior color combination, customers can also opt for BMW Individual rear lettering and BMW Individual 19" V-spoke light-alloy wheels. On request 20" are also available. All body paint variants can be combined with the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line or BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminum satinated.
For the interior, the Individual range adds full leather trim in fine-grain Merino stems available for the seats, door trim panels, center console and instrument panel. It can be ordered in Platinum, Champagne, Amaro Brown, Cohiba Brown or Opal White version.
Any option of leather can be combined with three variants of BMW Individual interior trim strips, Piano Finish Black or Plane Auburn dark wood.
 The engine
Under the hood everything remains unchanged: the usual 4.4-liter V8 engine with a direct injection and turbo-charging technology will deliver a total of 400 HP between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm with 450 lb/ft of peak torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. The engine can be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or the BMW’s new eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission. Either way, the top speed remains limited to 155 mph.

The competition

This new package will help the 650i Convertible staying on top of its competitors even more. Models like Mercedes SL-ClassJaguar XK Convertible or Porsche 911 Cabriolet will have lots of reason to fear. Maybe expect the Porsche who has always been more powerful that the 650i.

2010 BMW 5-Series Preview

BMW has already “in works” the next instalment of their successful executive saloon. Several test mules have been spotted, pointing that a production ready 5 Series is to be released in the next three or four years. The current BMW 5 Series is around for more than 4 years, meaning that it is well in its middle age, and needing a successor around the year 2010. The next generation 5-Series will grow in overall length, by extending the wheelbase nearly 3 inches and widening the track, so will be bigger then the actual one.
It is expected that the next generation executive BMW will grow in pretty much every direction, including wheelbase and wheel-track. In order to keep up, the wheels will follow the same trend, and standard equipment will feature 17” rims. Sports versions (like the M5), are expected to use 20” wheels or bigger.
The new proportions will head the 5 Series into a sportier look, with a coupe feel in it. A glimpse of that has already been shown by BMW, with their latest concept, the CS.
Technologically, the future 5 Series will be as surprising and uncompromising as ever. The only difference will be that, in the overall tendency of the market, there will be an increased attention to the ecological and fuel consumption issues. Performance will be even better than before, helped by those components that give the BMW name, the power units. Starting from a 2.5 litre straight 6 with 220 bhp, the petrol engine range will extend up to the brand new 410 bhp V8 biturbo. Four diesel engines will also be made available, ranging between 2.0 and 3.0 litres, with single and biturbo systems and offering over 300 bhp.
The diesel engines should get urea injection – as Mercedes is pioneering – to cut nitrogen oxide emissions. A stop/start system and upshift indicator for six-speed manual versions will help reduce fuel consumption,
The classic six-speed manual gearbox is joined by a traditional, torque-converter automatic that shifts 50 percent quicker and also can skip gears. BMW’s unloved SMG sequential manual found in today’s M5 bites the dust, but two new auto/manual hybrids are planned. One is a faster-shifting evolution of the current SMG. The other is a dual-clutch automatic.

History

First generation 5-series: E12 - 1972-1981

The E12 5 series was introduced in 1972. It was available as 4 door sedan. There were two models available: the 520 and 520i. Both models had a M10 four cylinder engine. The 520 had 115 HP and the 520i 130 HP. In 1973 the 525 cameavailable. It had a six cylinder engine with 145 HP. A year later the 518 was introduced. This model had a four cylinder with just 90 HP. In that same year the 530i came available. It had a six cylinder engine.
In 1975 a 528 six cylinder came available. It had 165 HP. In 1976 the 5 series received a small facelift. The grille now looked the same as the one on the E21 3 series and the rear lights where bigger now. The 520 and 520i four cylinder where replaced by a 520i six cylinder wich had 122 HP. The 528 was replaced with a 528i wich had electronic fuel injection and 184 HP. The 530i went out of production. In 1981 a new 5 series was introduced and the old E12 went out of production.

Second generation 5-series: E28 - 1982-1988

The BMW E28 was the second BMW 5 Series and stylistically, was an evolution of the E12. The new vehicle was similar to the popular E12 but was lower, had more engine choices, and minor styling updates. The most obvious change was to the car’s rear third where the fenders and trunk lid stood high rather than drooping as in the E12. But the nose was also thoroughly changed with a new hood that didn’t wrap over into the fenders (as it did on the E12) and a more aerodynamic grille.
In performance, the most notable E28 models were the M5 and the M535i. The 535i has a 12 valve 218hp six cylinder engine, while the M5 has a 24 valve twin cam 286hp engine. The M5 also has modified suspension and brakes.
The US market featured the "eta" engine. The 2.7 liter eta engine was designed to use less fuel, while still offering good performance. These models were designated 528e. This is the same engine used in the 3 series E30 325e.

Third generation 5-series: E34 - 1989-1996

The third-generation 5 Series, designated E34 within BMW, was truly an all-new vehicle. The 1989 5 rode on a longer 108.7-inch wheelbase, had an all-new structure with an all-new suspension, was significantly roomier than before and was a leap forward in sophistication, refinement, performance and overall comfort. As good as the E12 and E28 5 Series cars were, it was the E34 that propelled the line to the forefront of critics’ minds.
The E34 arrived in America powered by slight variations of familiar drivetrains. The 525i used a 2.5-liter version of BMW’s small SOHC straight six making 168 hp, while the 535i used a 3.5-liter version of the big SOHC six rated at 204 hp. While Europe got a new E34-based M5, it wasn’t initially offered in America. A driver-side airbag became standard on all 1990 BMWs, but otherwise changes to the 5 Series were minimal. Automatic Stability Control (ASC) was added to the 535i’s options list during the year, however.
The M5 returned to America during the 1991 model year with its 3.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve Motorsport six now whacking out a full 310 hp. Available only with a five-speed manual transmission, the M5 was again a sensation despite the fact that it wore a set of the ugliest 17-inch wheels ever made.

Fourth generation 5-series: E39 - 1996-2003

The E39 was BMW’s successor to the E34 five series. The car was introduced in 1996 but was out almost a year later in the USA and mainland Europe. Produced from 1997-2003, the E39 5 Series is one of the most successful and lauded model series in BMW’s history. The awards the E39 has won over its seven-year run include four AutoWeek "America’s Best" awards, seven Edmunds.com "Most Wanted" awards, six Car and Driver 10Best awards, and a total of twelve Automobile Magazine All-Star awards. In its last full calendar year of sales, the 5 Series set an all-time sales record of nearly 41,000 units in the U.S.
The E39 is more streamlined than the E34. The E39 is only slightly heavier than the E34 due to aluminum suspension components. The E39 was introduced as a four door coupe, with the touring model appearing a year later. Unlike the E34, there is no four wheel drive model.
In Europe there were no longer any four-cylinder 5 Series cars offered, while in America the 5 Series offerings dwindled to just the six-cylinder 528i and the V8-powered 540i sedan for 1997. With 190 hp on tap and five gears aboard either its manual or automatic transmissions, the 528i was a solid performing machine despite its position as the entry-level 5. The 540i, on the other hand, now had a full 282 hp that was lashed either to five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmissions after a displacement bump to 4.4 liters (a change not reflected in the car’s name). The six-speed included a "Sport" package of an aggressive suspension and oversize wheels and tires to produce something nearly M5ish in nature.

Fifth generation 5-series: E60/61 - 2004-present

The BMW E60 is the current BMW 5 Series. Its design and many of its advanced features initially received mixed reviews. The E60 represents a huge leap in technological advance over previous models. It is now regarded as one of BMWs finest and most innovative models.
Active Seat continuous passive motion available on the 7-Series is introduced as an option on the 5 Series for driver and front passenger seats. It is available in both sedan and wagon versions.
The basic lineup of the new 5 Series is unchanged from before, though the wagons won’t be along until the 2005 model year. There’s still a 525i and 530i with BMW’s familiar straight sixes aboard, and the new 545i uses the same 4.4-liter engine as the 540i did, but recognizes the displacement in its name — and then some. The 2.5-liter six is still rated at 184 hp, the 3.0-liter six makes 225 horses and the revised 4.4-liter V8 now makes a stunning 325 hp. New six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are offered with each engine with manual "Steptronic" shifting on the automatic and the exotic "Sequential Manual Gearbox" (SMG) available with the manual transmission.

Competitors

Mercedes E-Class

For over 60 years the E-Class and its predecessors have been the “heart” of Mercedes-Benz, representing basic brand values like safety, comfort, innovation, economy and quality. Since 1946 Mercedes-Benz has delivered some ten million luxury sedans to customers all over the world.
29 model variants are available - 16 Saloons and 13 Estates. As such, Mercedes-Benz is offering the largest, most varied model range in this market segment. With outputs ranging from 100 kW/136 hp to 378 kW/ 514 hp, the new generation E-Class outpaces the previous model range (90 kW/122 hp to 350 kW/476 hp) and its competitors.
Six of the ten engines available for the new-generation E-Class are either new or have been enhanced. The four-cylinder-diesel engines for the E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI in particular have been optimized down to the last detail in order to further improve output, torque and smooth running characteristics.
The gasoline engines for the E-Class were also enhanced, and the engineers at Mercedes focused particularly on the four- and eight-cylinder drive systems. At the top of the E-Class’ engine range will be the all-new 5.5-liter V8 from the S Class, with an output of 388 hp. The model lineup will be expanded by the E 63 AMG, whose 514 hp engine makes it the most powerful E-Class ever built. Agility and driving pleasure will be greatly enhanced not only by the new and improved engines, but also by the DIRECT CONTROL package with more responsive steering and a retuned chassis.

Audi A6

Audi set a new benchmark in the luxury performance segment when it introduced the Audi A6 to North America. A scant one year later, the successful V8 and V6 variants are being joined by an A6 3.2 sedan with Audi’s revolutionary multitronic (CVT) transmission and FrontTrak front wheel drive. In all of its forms, the latest generation of the Audi A6 combines superior driving dynamics and sophisticated technology with exceptional comfort and equipement.

Powerful engines with up to eight cylinders and 335 horsepower, the most advanced transmission technologies, and a choice between quattro permanent all-wheel drive or FrontTrak front wheel drive make Audi’s current A6 range its most comprehensive ever. Thanks to the cutting-edge suspension combined with high body rigidity, this power and performance opens up a new dimension in driving dynamics.
Eight potent and cultivated engines power the A6 – five petrol units and three TDIs, the diesel versions being equipped with particulate filters. The power output of the engines ranges from 103 kW/140 bhp to 257 kW/350 bhp. In addition to front-wheel drive, most versions are available with quattro permanent four-wheel drive incorporating the self-locking centre differential; this is standard on the 4.2 FSI and 3.0 TDI. Three modern technologies transmit power to the wheels – a manual six-speed gearbox, a tiptronic transmission, likewise with six speeds, and the continuously variable multitronic.

Mazda 2011

Mazda 2011 Mazda is primed and ready to go to the Geneva Motor Show with their latest concept, the Minagi. This new concept car previews the next generation CX5-SUV.
As seen in the Shinary Concept, the design of the Mazda Minagi jumps out at us with that big smiling face and those flowing lines. The new, much more aggressive and sporty design will make the future CX-5 a very important competitor for models like the Audi-Q5, the Volkswagen Tiguan, and the recently launched Kia Sportage.
According to the first details offered by Mazda, Minagi is a compact crossover SUV concept that combines Mazda’s SkyActiv technologies – which represent the harmony between driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance – with emotional Kodo design that communicates pent-up energy bursting with vitality as the vehicle nimbly navigates a sprawling urban cityscape. Fully introducing SkyActiv technologies throughout, Minagi is equipped with a SkyActiv engine and SkyActiv transmission fitted to a SkyActiv-Body and chassis that merge comprehensive weight reduction with the assurance of ample safety features.

Exterior and Interior

The fourth generation Mazda MX-5 will feature a large five-point grille and fluid lines, just like the Shinari concept. Headlamps will get LED lights technology and everything will be a combination of sportiness and elegance. The interior will get sports seats and different aluminum insertions. The latest technologies will also appear in the future MX5.

The Engine

Under the hood of the future Mazda MX-5 there will be a newly developed four-cylinder engine with up to 160 hp. It will be a direct injection engine and will come with a start-stop system. These two features are new for the MX-5 and will help in improving the car’s fuel consumption. The standard gearbox will be a six-speed manual, but buyers who don’t want to use this car to it’s full potential can get a dual-clutch semi-automatic.

2011 Mazda Minagi Concept

2011 Mercedes SLR

2011 Mercedes SLR Earlier today we brought news of a Wheelsandmore tuning package for theMercedes SLS AMG, now it’s time for its ancestor to get our attention. Well, actually, it got the attention of the very same tuner, who seems to show the same interest for the old McLaren SLR, both the standard and the SLR 722 S.

Wheelsandmore is known for adding a bit of brawn to vehicles with owners looking to brighten up their day with a little custom to their car. The tuner doesn’t really add any exterior or interior changes other than the obvious addition of new wheels, but then again, this tuner doesn’t necessarily tune vehicles that need any extra help in the looks department. A couple of months ago they fixed up the Mercedes SL65 AMG with a boost and some new wheels and now they are revealing a package for the Mercedes SLS AMG. The kit for this sports car adds the usual engine mods and wheels, but it also includes some other minor additions.
The Mercedes SLS AMG was designed as a response to McLaren’s MP4-12C, but while Mercedes is still deciding on whether or not to build a Black Series version that will come closer to the horsepower provided by the MP4-12C, German tuner Kicherer is busy creating an even faster version of the Mercedessupercar. The Mercedes SLS 63 Supersport was developed in cooperation with KW Automotive and improves both the car’s aerodynamics and performance.
One of the important events that happens at the LA Auto Show that we are all excited about is the Los Angeles Design Challenge, an annual competition at the LA Auto Show that provides up-and-coming designers with the opportunity to collaborate with an automaker to design a futuristic concept vehicle using a few set requirements. This year, the theme of the challenge is to build a safe and comfortable 2+2 compact car that comes with excellent handling and cutting-edge design and weighs in at no more than 1,000 lbs.

2011 Mercedes SLR by Wheelsandmore

mercedes slr by wheelsandmore
Earlier today we brought news of a Wheelsandmore tuning package for the Mercedes SLS AMG, now it’s time for its ancestor to get our attention. Well, actually, it got the attention of the very same tuner, who seems to show the same interest for the old McLaren SLR, both the standard and the SLR 722 S.
Out of the two vehicles featured, the most impressive package belongs to the 722 S version, where the addition of optimized control electronics, a change in compression ratio, and a completely hand-made, improved exhaust system with radio remote-controlled exhaust valves, the vehicle’s output is increased to an impressive 730 HP (up from standard 650 HP). However, the increase for the standard SLR isn;t too shabby either with a bump to 680hp. Top speed for the 722 S is now 213 mph and 211 mph for the standard SLR.
Next to these amazing engine upgrades, the tuner is also offering a racing chassis, new 20" in-house forged wheels, and carbon fiber components for the interior.

Ferrari 2011

Ferrari-f599 Now that a GT version of the Ferrari 458 Italia is expected to take the reigns from the Ferrari 430 GT in the upcoming ALMS season, a lot of people in the automotive and racing industry have been waiting for quite some time to see a glimpse of the GT-spec 458 Italia in action. Jon Sibal even gave us a very detailed renderingof what he thought the 458 GT would look like when Ferrari finally lifts the covers off of the race car.
While most tuners are focusing on the new Ferrari 458 Italia, Premier 4509 is looking to bring inspiration towards an older model. The Japanese tuner has previously unveiled a Veilside tuni for the old F430 and now Wheels Boutique has upgraded that very same model with, wait for it, a new set of wheels. The full package will still be limited to just 300 units.
Typically, we tend to believe that Ferrari models are just about perfect straight from the factory, and that any changes made by any experienced tuners would strip away the beauty of the vehicle. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule and today’s exception comes in the form of a Ferrari 458 Italia tuned by the very same guys that brought us the modified F430 earlier. Wheelsandmore have taken the Italian sports car and have done what they do best: add just a little something to spice it up.

Wheelsandmore’s focus has shifted from Mercedes SLR and SLS AMG to a brand with a bit more speed: Ferrari. For the Maranello-based automaker, the German tuner has chosen the F430 to dazzle us with their exterior mods and engine updates.

The idea of developing a unique Ferrari 550 GTZ begun when Yoshiyuki Hayashi, the famous Japanese collector, asked for a special body for his Ferrari 575M, in the style of the famous 250GTZ Berlinetta of 1956. When Zagato received his request they informed Ferrari of the project, and they considered it an ideal opportunity to celebrate that model’s 50th anniversary. This chain of events is what led to the creation of a Ferrari that harkens back to the 250GTZ with Ferrari 575 base. The car was great as a coupe model, but Zagato wanted to create a special roadster version, and so they did.

2010 Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari UK Edition

abarth 695 tributo ferrari uk edition

What’s better than a Ferrari? Well, how about...Okay, we can’t even finish that. We know this Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari UK Edition is not anywhere near as good as a Ferrari, but it’s definitely a nice little tribute to Italy’s finest. The Abarth 695 will go on sale in the UK as a Right Hand Drive version and will be limited to only 152 units each priced at 35,500 EUROS.
What’s a tribute to Ferrari without a Scuderia-inspired paint job and some carbon accessories? Well, for starters, it wouldn’t be a good tribute, which is why this Abarth models sports the classic red paint finish and carbon touches. The exterior is finished with 17" alloy wheels.
Under the hood, the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari will feature a 1.4L turbocharged engine mated to a 5-speed C510 gearbox. This combination leaves the Abarth with 180hp and a top speed of 140mph. The 0-62mph sprint gets accomplished in under seven seconds. A sport button is placed in the dashboard to give the gearbox, engine control unit, and steering a racier feeling complete with more response from the car.

Nissan GTR

Nissan GTR 7 Hennessey has already created what was once the fastest Nissan GT-R in the world, but not everyone can handle 800 kicking horses in one sports car. So, for those with not enough gusto to handle the beast, but who are not satisfied with the tame 473 HP found in the standard GT-R, Hennessey has a package for you. It is called the GTR650, and the name pretty much says it all.

Nissan has unveiled a new idea for a sustainable zero emission society and an electric vehicle (EV). Nissan’s new Mobility Concept is defined by four essential keywords: innovative, easy, safe and clean.

The Nismo 370Z is still a child in terms of lifespan with the first model coming into the picture in 2009, so the idea of the 370Z strolling into the 2011MY with an abundance of additions is pretty naive. Instead, and not unexpected, the Nismo 370Z comes back with next to nothing altered. It still carries the same 350 HP V6 engine, racing-inspired exterior and interior styling, a specially tuned suspension, and unique super-lightweight forged alloy wheels. However, Nissan is offering one new exterior color: Gun Metallic.

The new generation Nissan Z Roadster entered the market a year later than its coupe brother, so with such a short history, the 370Z Roadster enters the 2011 model year with no major updates. Changes for 2011 are limited to the addition of RearView Monitor to the optional Navigation Package and one new exterior color, Gun Metallic. The Roadster model is offered in two versions: 370Z Roadster priced at $37,520 and 370Z Touring Roadster priced at $41,070.
Senner Tuning just might have a thing for white cars. Last year they came out with a vehicle which they are now famous for called the Whitelady Z and they also introduced the "White Power" RS6, which wasn’t exactly a treat for the eyes. Both were tuned by Senner and both were sparkling white. Now, Senner Tuning is bringing on yet another white model packaged up in a Nissan 370Z. It’s called the Asphalt Surfer and is capable of producing an impressive 365 HP.

In the world of import sport cars, or as some would call it sport compact cars, many enthusiasts can say that they have seen many models that would cater to their lifestyle come and go from various automakers. We have seen makes like the Toyota Supra come and evolve into a force not to be trifled with on and off the tracks. The same can be said for the earlier versions of the Mazda RX7and the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. The problem with all of these Japanese powerhouses, who ran strong and were very popular in their prime, was that they started fading away leaving the sports compact consumer in wait for the next best thing.

2011 Ferrari 458 Italia GT2

2011 Ferrari 458 Italia GT2  Now that a GT version of the Ferrari 458 Italia  is    expected to take the reigns from the Ferrari 430 GT in the upcoming ALMS season, a lot of people in the automotive and racing industry have been waiting for quite some time to see a glimpse of the GT-spec 458 Italia in action. Jon Sibal even gave us a very detailed rendering of what he thought the 458 GT would look like when Ferrari finally lifts the covers off of the race car.
But after months of waiting, we can finally let out a little exhale as a prototype version of the 458 GT was spotted recently doing some test runs inside Ferrari’s Fiorano race track in Maranello, Italy.
Not that we care about the timeline of development for the 458 GT. As far as we’re concerned, we’re just happy to see visual proof of the car – prototype or not – playing in its natural habitat: the race track.
Updated 12/14/2010: Someone who goes by the name ILikeFastCars1 - yeah, us too - has just added a new video showing the 458 Italia GT2 testing around the Fiorano test track. Exterior and Interior:
As far as initial reactions go, we couldn’t help but notice just how bad-ass the 458 GT prototype looks, especially those angry yellow endurance-racing headlights that seem to look meaner and more and more menacing every time we look at them. Other pertinent features of the prototype that caught our attention are the flared fenders, as well as the vented hood that looks to be – at least from this angle – a little more rounded than the standard version. We also noticed that the car’s front splitter is still noticeably absent, proving that this prototype could very well still be in its early ages. Lastly, there’s also three-piece racing wheels on the prototype 458 GT2. Can’t forget about that.
Performance:
As per ACO regulations, the 458 Italia GT2 will only be limited to 470 horsepower, which is about 100 less than the road-going 458 Italia and about 30 horsepower down on its predecessor, the F430 GT2. The 458 Italia GT2 also has a six-speed paddle-shift transmission.

2010 Ferrari 458 Italia

Stop the press! Ferrari has officially unveiled the 458 Italia, the long awaited successor for the mid-engine Ferrari F430, and the design is leaving our editorial staff speechless! The super car looks impressive from any angle as it has a design that has never been seen before on a Ferrari model. The high performance sports car comes complete with a new engine, improved aerodynamics, upgraded handling, and improved instrumentation and ergonomics inside the cabin.

Exterior and Interior

Designed by Pininfarina, the 458 Italia features compact and aerodynamic lines. There is a single opening for the front grille and side air intakes, with aerodynamic sections and profiles designed to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody. The nose also sports small aeroelastic winglets which generate downforce. The car’s rear is defined by triple exhaust tail pipes, a styling cue that recalls the legendary F40.
The interior combines leather for the upper and lower surfaces of the dashboard with aluminum insertions for the instrument binnacle. The original shape of the air vents was inspired by the design of Formula 1 exhaust chimneys in use up until a few years ago. The console includes two Alcantara-trimmed storage trays for small oddments.
Ferrari is offering its clients the "Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme" that allows them to personalize their car to suit their own tastes and requirements. As with the rest of the range, there are four main personalization areas dedicated the 458 Italia: Racing and Track, Exterior and Colors, Interior and Materials, Equipment and Travel.

The Engine

The Ferrari 458 Italia is powered by a 4,499 cc V8 engine that delivers a total of 570 HP at 9,000 rpm and a peak torque of 540 Nm at 6000 rpm. The engine delivers an outstanding power output of 127 HP/liter and 120 Nm/liter. All this while delivering only 307 g/km of CO2 and a fuel consumption of just 13.3 l/100 km.
The engine is mated to a F1 dual-clutch gearbox and sprints the sports car from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.4 seconds while top speed goes up to an impressive 201 mph.

The Competition

The 458 Italia takes on models like the Audi R8, Aston Martin DBS, and Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 While the R8 is no doubt the cheapest one, the 458 Italia features a fresher design, and it comes with the glorious Ferrari name.
When it comes to power, the 458 Italia also has a huge advantage. By comparison the DBS goes to 510 HP, the Gallardo Lp560-4 at 560 HP, and the 458 Italia delivers 570 HP.

The Price

The 458 Italia is on sale at a base price of $225,000.
